Es dauerte recht lange, bis sich diese Aufführung von Mahlers 3. Symphonie bei mir einklinkte. 75 Minuten lang hörte ich bloß zu, stellte sachlich fest, dass Jansons Kontrolle der Materie souverän ist, mit einer guten Balance und einem guten Niveau des Orchesters und der Vokalisten. Mehr ist da aber nicht, und das ist nicht einmal so viel als in Jansons’ Aufnahme desselben Werkes mit dem Concertgebouworkest, die vitaler und leidenschaftlicher ist. Das Finale gestaltet Jansons intensiver, gefühlvoller, mit besserem Atem und mehr Inspiration. Aber wer will schon 75 Minuten Leerlauf, ehe endlich etwas passiert? Es gibt zu viele im Ganzen spannende Einspielungen der Dritten Mahler, als dass man diese noch brauchen würde.
It took a long time for this performance of Mahler’s 3rd Symphony to click with me. For 75 minutes I just listened, objectively noting that Jansons’ control of the material is commanding, with good balance and good musical quality from the orchestra and singers. But that’s all there is, and it’s not even as much as in Jansons’ recording of the same work with the Concertgebouworkest, which is more vital and passionate. Jansons makes the finale more intense, more emotional, with more breath and more inspiration. But who wants 75 minutes of idling before something happens? There are too many exciting recordings of the Mahler Third to need this one.
