Das neueste Album von True Concord, A Dream So Bright, enthält zwei Weltersteinspielungen von Werken des 1986 geborenen amerikanischen Komponisten Jake Runestad. True Concord Voices and Orchestra ist ein Ensemble aus Tucson, Arizona.

Das 25 Minuten dauernde Dreams of the Fallen ist ein sehr stimmungsvolles Werk für Soloklavier, Chor und Orchester auf Texte des Dichters Brian Turner, eines Veteranen des Irak- und Afghanistankrieges. Die schonungslos anklagende Musik thematisiert den Schmerz des Kriegserlebnisses in einer aufgewühlt emotionalen Musik, die von höchster Intensität bis zu größter Ruhe reicht und in dieser engagierten und stimmungsvollen Interpretation unter die Haut geht. Jeffrey Biegel lässt dem Klavierpart, der den Traum eines Soldaten darstellt, sehr beeindruckend werden.

Turners eindringliche Anfangsworte werden am Ende wiederholt: « And I keep telling myself that if I walk far enough or long enough, someday I’ll come out the other side. » (Und ich sage mir immer wieder, dass ich, wenn ich weit genug oder lange genug gehe, eines Tages auf der anderen Seite herauskommen werde.)

Earth Symphony, mit Gedichten von Todd Boss, wurde von True Concord in Auftrag gegeben und 2022 uraufgeführt. Die Symphonie hat fünf Sätze, in denen eine musikalische Relation zwischen der Erde und der Menschheit hergestellt wird, eine Menschheit, deren ‘Ambitionen’ (2. Satz) zum Satz ‘Zerstörung’ fuhren, der Umweltkatastrophen wie Waldbrände, Stürme und  Erdbeben beschreibt, die berserkerhaft vom Orchester dargestellt werden.

Der vierte Satz, Humanity, erinnert an Henry Purcells Arie ‘When I Am Laid in Earth’ (Dido’s Lament). Im 5. Satz, Recovery, stellt die Erde ihr Gleichgewicht wieder her und bewegt sich weiter in eine tiefe Raumzeit, wie die, aus der sie hervorgegangen ist.

Die ökologisch-musikalische Tondichtung ist evokativ, effektvoll und musikalisch brillant gemacht und wird ebenso spannend wie grandios aufgeführt.

Ein großes Lob gilt auch dem Tonmeister, der eine plastische und gut proportionierte Aufnahme realisiert hat.

The 25-minute Dreams of the Fallen is a highly evocative work for solo piano, chorus and orchestra set to texts by poet Brian Turner, a veteran of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The relentlessly accusatory music addresses the pain of the war experience in stirring, emotional music that ranges from the most intense to the most serene, getting under your skin in this committed and atmospheric interpretation. Jeffrey Biegel is particularly impressive in the piano part, which represents a soldier’s dream.

Turner’s haunting opening words are repeated at the end: « And I keep telling myself that if I walk far enough or long enough, someday I’ll come out the other side. »

Earth Symphony, with poems by Todd Boss, was commissioned by True Concord and premiered in 2022. The symphony is in five movements, establishing a musical relationship between the earth and humanity, a humanity whose ‘Ambitions’ (2nd movement) have led to the movement ‘Destruction’, which describes environmental disasters such as forest fires, storms and earthquakes, which are berserkly depicted by the orchestra.

The fourth movement, Humanity, recalls Henry Purcell’s aria ‘When I Am Laid in Earth’ (Dido’s Lament). In the fifth movement, Recovery, the Earth regains its equilibrium and moves on, back into the deep space-time from which it emerged.

This ecological-musical tone poem is evocative, effective and musically brilliant, and truly exciting in this magnificent performance.

Praise is also due to the sound engineer, who has produced a vivid and well-proportioned recording.
