Die Sets for Chamber Orchestra von Charles Ives (1874-1954) sind gewissermaßen Lieder ohne Worte, die auf Liedern basieren, deren Texte im Booklet abgedruckt sind. Obwohl einige Sets keinen deskriptiven Titel haben wie andere (Three Poets and human Nature, From the Side Hill, Water Colors) so haben die meisten Teile der Sets doch einen Namen, der ihren Charakter beschreibt. Set 9 beinhaltet The Unanswered Question in seiner originalen Form.
Für die vorliegende Aufnahme haben James Sinclair, Kenneth Singleton und David Porter die Partituren gründlich überarbeitet und Fehler ausgemerzt.
Die Interpretationen sind raffiniert, klar strukturiert und expressiv. Das Orchestra New England brilliert in virtuosen wie in langsameren Stücken mit einem Maximum an Spannung und Farben. Im Gegensatz zu anderen Dirigenten spielt Sinclair die Aggressivität der Kompositionen nicht voll aus, sondern bemüht sich um eine feine Darstellung von Groteskem, Ironischem und Nostalgischem.

The interpretations are refined, clearly structured and expressive of the Orchestra New England shines in virtuoso as well as in slower pieces with a maximum of tension and colors. Unlike other conductors, Sinclair does not play to the fullest the aggressiveness of the compositions, but strives for a fine portrayal of the grotesque, the ironic, and the nostalgic.
