Charles Magby Jr., owner of Charles Magby Fine Violins Ltd. has been charged with larceny following an investigation by the Guilford police. Subsequently he was charged with first-degree larceny, according to a press release issued Saturday by Guilford police. Magby has operated a fine violin and cello business in Guilford (Connecticut) and New York City for more than 30 years.
Magby Jr. turned himself in at the Guilford Police station after being notified that this agency held an arrest warrant for him. He was arrested after several complaints were received of Magby offering to sell high-end custom instruments; violins, cello’s, bows, and similar items on consignment. Magby then failed to provide the funds from the sale, or return of the consigned item, if not sold.
The instrument maker and dealer was given a court date of 09/03/13. He was released on a $50,000 surety bond.
The Guilford Police encourages anyone with additional information on Magby’s consignment, sales, and restoration business, or whom believe they may have been a victim of Magby’s business dealings to contact the Guilford Police at 203-453-8061.
