From October 2023 45-year-old Columbian conductor Andrés Orozco-Estrada will be the new Principal Conductor of the Rai National Symphony Orchestra in Torino. The contract has been signed for three years. This has been announced today by the RAI press office.
From the 2025/2026 season Orozco-Estrada will become Generalmusikdirektor of the City of Cologne, taking the reins of the Gürzenich Orchestra and Opera of the German city. In April 2022 he resigned abruptly from his position as of Chief Conductor of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra.
Born in 1977 in Medellín, Colombia, Orozco-Estrada studied violin at the Instituto Musical Diego Echavarría, then switched to conducting at age 15. He moved to Bogota to train at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana de la Compañía de Jesús, and later, in 1997, to Vienna, where he attended the University of Music and Performing Arts, studying with Uroš Lajovic.
