Diese CD folgt den Programmvorstellungen des amerikanischen Komponisten und Pianisten George Antheil (1900-1959), der sich schon früh als ein Vertreter der Avantgarde etablierte und mit Künstlern wie Satie, Cocteau, Joyce oder Hemingway verkehrte. Seine Musik selbst ist stark rhythmisch und perkussiv geprägt und mit Dissonanzen gespickt, wie die hier eingespielte Sonata Nr. 1 zeigt. Daneben sind Piece for Violin and piano und Extensions 1 von Morton Feldman, Nocturne von John Cage und die Violinsonate Nr. 7 von Beethoven zu hören. Also ein typisches Antheil-Programm, wie es auch der Titel dieser CD, Le Monde selon George Antheil verspricht.
Gespielt wird auf allerhöchstem Niveau. Patricia Kopachinskaja und der Pianist Joonas Ahonen machen sich eine helle Freude daraus, dieses Repertoire nach Lust und Laune auszuloten, wobei Antheils Sonate natürlich den Höhepunkt darstellt. Fast hätte man sich gewünscht, dass beide Interpreten ausschließlich Werke von Antheil aufgenommen hätten. Aber das kommt ja vielleicht noch.
This CD follows the program ideas of the American composer and pianist George Antheil (1900-1959), who established himself early on as a representative of the avant-garde and associated with artists such as Satie, Cocteau, Joyce and Hemingway. His music itself is strongly rhythmic and percussive and peppered with dissonance, as evidenced by his first Sonata. Also featured are Piece for Violin and piano and Extensions 1 by Morton Feldman, Nocturne by John Cage, and Violin Sonata No. 7 by Beethoven. In other words, a typical Antheil program, as promised by the title of this CD, Le Monde selon George Antheil.
The playing is of the very highest level. Patricia Kopachinskaja and pianist Joonas Ahonen take great pleasure in exploring this repertoire to their heart’s content, with Antheil’s Sonata being the highlight, of course. One almost wished that both performers had recorded only works by Antheil. But perhaps that will come.
