The ARD Music Competition takes place in Munich in a succession of four selection phases, between September 3 and 20, in the categories Wind Quintet, Vocal, Oboe and Cello. The first selection round starts on Tuesday, September 3, with the Wind Quintet category.
Simon Rattle refers to “Music’s Olympic Games”, referencing the event that for over 70 years has been bringing together talents on the world’s classical music scene in order to systematically promote them. The ARD Music Competition is the only contest at which, alongside vocal music, almost all orchestral instruments – on an annually rotating basis – are represented.
The competition’s worldwide standing is endorsed yet again this year by the record number of applicants. More than 700 applications from 58 nations were received for this year’s contest.
Following a preliminary selection process, a total of 312 candidates were invited to come to Munich to participate in the competition.
Simon Rattle, Principal Conductor of Bavarian Radio’s Symphony Orchestra and the BR Choir, has committed to conducting the prizewinners’ final concert in 2025.
