Czech conductor Jiri Belohlavek, 71, chief conductor and artistic director of the Czech Philharmonic, died today, the Orchestra announced. The Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) has announced that British conductor Andrew Davis, 73, will be Interim Artistic Director for two seasons after Peter Oundjian’s 14-year tenure as Music Director finishes at the end of the 2017/18 season. Andrew Davis was the Orchestra’s Music Director from 1975 to 1988.

The St. Cloud Symphony Orchestra (St. Cloud, Minnesota) announced that it has hired American conductor Brian Dowdy as Music Director. Dowdy signed a three-year contract that begins this month. Dowdy is also artistic director and principal conductor of the Mississippi Valley Orchestra.
West Virginia Symphony Orchestra in Charleston has announced Lawrence Loh, 47, as its new music director. The California-born conductor is also music director of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic and music director of the Syracuse based Symphoria, where he has just signed a contract extending his stay in Syracuse to 2022. Additionally, Loh is Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Syracuse Opera.
The Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra (Ontario, Canada) has announced the appointment of Québec-born Canadian conductor and violinist Simon Rivard. He succeeds Jean-Michel Malouf. The orchestra is expected to announce also a new music director in June.
