Shortly after the dismissal of the former manager Boris Mezdrich, Novosibirsk Opera got a new director, Vladimir Kehman. Mezdrich was fired after the Russian Orthodox Church and some activists reacted negatively to the staging of Wagner’s Tannhäuser directed by Timothy Kulyabin. Now, Kehman himself came under criticism. A group of employees wrote a petition to dismiss the newly appointed manager as they are not satisfied both with the costly renovation of the theatre and the repertoire. The protesters reproach Kehman with a lack of coherent artistic ideas and they are worried because of the absence of any serious planning for the next season.

A labour dispute about a new collective bargaining agreement has led the orchestra’s Board to cancel the season opening concert of New York’s Binghamton Philharmonic. According to Drew McManus, the crux of the dispute focuses the orchestra’s proposal to eliminate mileage for musicians living more than 10 miles from their primary venue

At a Salzburg Festival’s Jedermann performance, the musicians sung The Internationale, a widely-sung left-wing anthem, when they discovered a bunch of right-wing politicians in the audience. They festival management didn’t like their protest and dissociated themselves from it.

Luxembourg’s National Youth Wind Orchestra comprising 59 musicians, 13 to 23 years old, will be on tour in the United States, from 26 August to 9 September. The orchestra will be conducted by François Schammo, the concerts being organized in the States of Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan.

Im Jahre 2013, schwer erkrankt, schrieb Peter Maxwell Davies seine 10. Symphonie, für die er sich beim italienischen Barockarchitekten Francesco Borromini inspirierte. Die Texte zitieren Leopardis Sonett ‘A se stesso’, Borrominis letztes Testament und ein anonymes Sonett, das Borrominis Arbeiten wegen ihrer ‘Exzentrik’ und einem ‘Mangel an Zusammenhalt’ angreift.
