New and easy EU rules for the handling of musical instruments at customs are applied as from today on. According to the new amendment travelers may temporarily import/export portable musical instruments as professional equipment without customs formalities. This means that when traveling with such instruments they may use the green or ‘nothing to declare’ Customs channel at airports. This will definitely end the confiscation of violins and other instruments especially at Frankfurt airport, which affected badly some musicians in the past. The new regulation is available here.

The Australian Broadcaster SBS (Special Broadcasting Service) will disband the SBS Youth Orchestra in December. This highly appreciated orchestra first performed in June 1989 under Matthew Krel, the founder. The announcement was made this week to the young players aged between 12 and 24. Thousands of young Australian musicians have played in the orchestra and many of them became professionals. The orchestra’s final concert will be on December 1 in Sydney.

Alain Surrans, currently leading the Opera in Rennes (France), will become the new General Manager of the Opera and National Orchestra in Montpellier. He will be the successor of Laurent Spielmann.

A devastating fire occurred on last Monday at the Municipal Theatre of Santiago de Chile, the principal venue for classical music and ballet in the country. The fire was located at the storage rooms and extinction works were complex. The flames destroyed costumes and stage elements. It is still not clear when the building from 1857 will be reopened.

Generell bin ich immer vorsichtig bei Preisgewinnern der internationalen Wettbewerbe. Die ‘Van Cliburn International Piano Competition’ ist allerdings eine erstklassige Adresse, und der Hörer wird vom diesjährigen Gewinner der Goldmedaille, Vadym Kholodenko, nicht enttäuscht. Zumindest macht der Live-Mitschnitt seines Konzerts mit Igor Stravinskys ‘Trois mouvements de Pétrouchka’ und Franz Liszts ‘Etudes Trancendentales’ hellhörig und neugierig. Read More →
