Among the three finalists, Navarra Quartet (UK/Ireland/The Netherlands), Quatuor Cavatine (France) and Dover Quartet (USA), the latter won First Prize in the International String Quartet Competition in Banf. Joel Link and Bryan Lee, violin, Milena Pajaro, viola, and Camden Shaw, violoncello, formed their ensemble at the Curtis Institute of Music in 2008, when they were just 19 years old. The Quartet draws from the musical lineage of both the Vermeer and Guarneri Quartets, but is also said to bring ‘a youthful enthusiasm and musical conviction to the repertoire that is truly its own’.

Jahrhunderts schrieb er in einem Kompositionsstil, der noch stark von der europäischen Spätromantik beeinflusst war und auch an Shostakovich erinnert. 286.301 Zuschauer haben die 280 Veranstaltungen der diesjährigen Salzburger Festspiele besucht, mehr als je zuvor. Die Einnahmen aus dem Kartenverkauf beliefen sind auf rund 29 Millionen Euro, 2,4 Millionen mehr als prognostiziert. Die Gesamtauslastung der Festspiele lag jedoch nur bei 93 Prozent (2011 waren es noch 95 Prozent). Die Schlussbilanz wird für November erwartet. Soviel aber konnte Intendant Pereira schon bei der Bilanzpressekonferenz behaupten: Der österreichische Staat unterstütze die Festspiele mit 5,4 Millionen Euro, während die Festspiele allein 7,5 Millionen Euro Lohnsummensteuer abgeben: « Man kann sagen, die Festspiele subventionieren die Republik und nicht umgekehrt. » Und dabei hat er den wirtschaftlichen Impakt der Festspiele im Hotel- und Gastronomiewesen noch gar nicht mit einberechnet….

Vor wenigen Monaten ist doch erst eine CD auf dem Markt erscchienen mit dem Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra unter der Leitung von John Storgårds (cf. Pizzicato-Druckausgabe Januar 2013), die von sich behauptet, sie sei die erste, die Korngolds vollständige Bühnenmusik zu ‘Viel Lärm um Nichts’ beinhaltet. Ohne unmittelbare Hilfe des Hamburger Senats stehen die Hamburger Symphoniker vor Insolvenz. Trotz gestiegener Zuschüsse ist ein Defizit von über 1,3 Millionen Euro aufgelaufen. There is a total congestion in the negotiations between the musicians and the management of the Minnesota Orchestra. According to the musicians’ association, « the board and management of the Minnesota Orchestra has abandoned the mediation process and the mediator they themselves selected. They have presented an offer to the Musicians which appears to be virtually identical to an offer that the Musicians unanimously rejected earlier in August, an offer that was made outside of the mediation process put in place by Governor Mark Dayton. » The musicians have been invited to vote on this new old offer until the 9th of September, but they say that there is no need for that, the offer having been already rejected. So, what now?
