British conductor and early music specialist Harry Bicket has been appointed chief conductor of Santa Fe Opera, starting in October 2013. He is the successor to Frédéric Chaslin, who resigned in August 2012 after two seasons, explaining he wanted to focus on composing and his job as music director of the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra. French conductor Emmanuel Joel-Hornak has been appointed new music director of Scottish Opera in Glasgow. Joel-Hornak, who has previously worked with the company as a guest conductor, will be the successor of Francesco Corti. He will join the company in August. Read More →

American conductor Benjamin Shwartz has been appointed new music director of the Symphony orchestra in Wrocław, in south-western Poland. He will replace Jacek Kaspszyk, who in September takes over as music director of the National Philharmonic in Warsaw, succeeding there to Antoni Wit. Read More →
Russian conductor Andrey Boreyko has been appointed Music Director of Florida’s Naples Philharmonic Orchestra. Boreyko’s five-year contract begins immediately; he assumes the title of Music Director Designate for the 2013-14 season, taking on the full role of Music Director in 2014-15. Read More →

Décidément, la soprane espagnole Montserrat Caballe a les os fragiles: Après s’être cassé le bras à la suite d’une légère commotion cérébrale en Russie en octobre dernier, elle a dû annuler à nouveau tous ses engagements jusque fin mai 2013 au moins, à la suite d’une fracture d’un bras. Monserrat Caballe a fait une très longue carrière de plus de 55 ans, avec 90 rôles d’opéra, 800 Lieder et plus de 4.000 représentations.

Le chef d’orchestre français Jean-François Paillard est décédé le 15 avril dernier, trois jours après son 85e anniversaire. Il est connu pour ses concerts et ses nombreux enregistrement avec l’Orchestre de chambre Jean-François Paillard (fondé en 1953 sous la dénomination ‘Ensemble instrumental Jean-Marie Leclair’). Sales are up for Opera Australia: Australia’s national opera company, resident at the Sydney Opera House and the Arts Centre, Melbourne, has increased its ticket sales in both of the houses and also on tour (Opera Australia has its own touring company, Oz Opera).
