Camille Saint-Saëns komponierte seine Symphonie  F-Dur mit dem Beinamen ‘Urbs Roma’ (Stadt Rom) 1857, im Alter von 22 Jahren. Er gewann damit nicht, wie erhofft, den ‘Prix de Rome’, aber immerhin den ersten Preis eines Kompositionswettbewerbs der ‘Société Sainte-Cécile’.
