The online magazine Thorax reports about a case of ‘Bagpipe lung’, thus warning wind instrument players to thoroughly clean their instrument to avoid any lung infection. The case which generated this information was the one by a 61-year-old bag-pipe player who was referred to the interstitial lung disease (ILD) clinic in April 2014 with a 7-year history of dry cough and progressive breathlessness despite immunosuppressive therapy. The man finally died, and is thought to have developed a bad reaction to mould and fungi lurking inside the moist interior of his bagpipes. That’s why doctors are urging other wind instrument players to be extra hygienic.
