At Berlin’s Barenboim-Said Akademie 37 young students from the Middle East started their studies at the beginning of the winter semester. Yesterday, the academy was officially inaugurated.
Built in the former Magazine of the State Opera Unter den Linden and designed by Richard Paulick, the academy’s construction cost was 35.1 million Euros. 21.4 million Euros came from the German Government and the rest of the expenses has been raised by private donors. The American architect Frank Gehry designed the concert hall named after Pierre Boulez The opening concert of hall takes place only on 4 March 2017.
The Barenboim-Said Akademie, established as a non-profit on July 31, 2012 by Daniel Barenboim in Berlin, offers state-accredited, full-time degree programs concluding with a Bachelor of Music.
The Akademie is based on the successful tradition of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra under the leadership of Daniel Barenboim. For the last 17 years, the orchestra has brought together musicians from the various cultures and societies of the Middle East. For six weeks every year, the orchestra tours all over the world.
