Der Zeitpunkt der Veröffentlichung dieser DVD war denkbar schlecht gewählt: der Film, gedreht 2017 anlässlich des 75. Geburtstags von Daniel Barenboim, erscheint zu einem Zeitpunkt, wo ein weiterer wohl kontrovers diskutierter Wutausbruch Barenboims den Weg in die Medien fand. Angesichts der sich teils widersprechenden Darstellungen über eine « Demütigung » eines Musikers des West Eastern Divan Orchesters bei den Salzburger Festspielen und weil ARTE den Teil des Schlussapplauses, wo diese angebliche Demütigung passierte, nicht mitgesendet hat, konnte ich den exakten Tatbestand nicht prüfen und deshalb hat Pizzicato keine Nachricht dazu veröffentlicht. Aber, dass Barenboim manchmal cholerisch, rechthaberisch und von sich auch sehr eingenommen ist, das hört man immer wieder Dass er sich einmal in Luxemburg wegen Pizzicato grün und gelb ärgerte, habe ich nicht vergessen. Es war eine Zeitlang Usus, dass Künstler in der Philharmonie die aktuelle Ausgabe von Pizzicato in ihrer Garderobe fanden. Barenboim hat das Heft mit der Begründung, sein Photo hätte bei seinem Besuch in Luxemburg auf dem Titelbild sein müssen, in den Papierkorb geschmissen.
Ich war allerdings zuvor schon kein bedingungsloser Anhänger des Musikers, auch wenn ich anerkenne, was er an Großem geleistet hat, insbesondere mit der Schaffung des Divan und auch der Barenboim-Said Akademie. Viele seiner Aufnahmen sind grandios. Aber es kann nicht sein, dass ein Porträt eines Dirigenten so kritiklos und lobhudelnd abläuft die jenes, das sich auf dieser DVD befindet, neben dem Eröffnungskonzert des Boulez-Saals. Und der Film beschränkt sich ja auch auf die Idee des Divan und der Akademie mit Saal. Das aber geht aus dem Titel des Films nicht hervor. Genau so wenig informiert das Coverblatt über Länge des Dokumentarfilms und des Konzerts. Das sind Angaben, die müssten eigentlich vorhanden sein.
Also, wenn Sie kein komplettes Porträt Barenboims sehen wollen und nur eines über ihn, die Akademie und den Divan, dann ist die DVD ok für Sie. Wenn Sie mehr wollen, unrühmliche Ereignisse in der Karriere Barenboims inklusive – und die gibt es zuhauf, nicht zuletzt in Sachen Du Pré – der wird enttäuscht werden.
The timing of the release of this DVD was conceivably badly chosen: the film, shot in 2017 on the occasion of Daniel Barenboim’s 75th birthday, is released s at a time when another arguably controversial outburst of rage by Barenboim found its way into the media. Given the partly contradictory accounts of a « humiliation » of a musician of the West Eastern Divan Orchestra at the Salzburg Festival, and because ARTE did not include the part of the final applause where this alleged humiliation happened, I could not verify the exact facts and therefore Pizzicato did not publish a news item about it. But one hears all too often that Barenboim is choleric and opinionated, that he is also very full of himself, and I haven’t forgotten that he once got green and yellow in Luxembourg because of Pizzicato. For a while it was customary for artists at the Philharmonie to find the current issue of Pizzicato in their dressing room. Barenboim threw the magazine in the trash, saying that his photo should have been on the cover during his visit to Luxembourg. I was not an unconditional supporter of the musician even before that, although I recognize great achievements like the creation of the Divan and the Barenboim-Said Academy. Many of his recordings are superb. But it can’t be that a portrait of a conductor comes off as uncritical and laudatory as the one on this DVD, next to the opening concert of the Boulez Hall. And the film is indeed limited to the idea of the Divan and the Academy with its hall. But this is not clear from the title of the film. Just as little does the cover sheet inform about the length of the documentary and the concert. These are details that should actually be published. So, if you don’t want to see a complete portrait of Barenboim and only one about him, the Academy and the Divan, the DVD is ok for you. If you want more, including inglorious events in Barenboim’s career – and there are plenty, not least in the matter of Du Pré – you will be disappointed.
