Belgian Government wants, in long-term, merge the orchestra of the opera house La Monnaie and the Belgian National Orchestra. This has been confirmed by the Ministry of Culture.
A number of measures will be taken as from 2016 on, to lead to the merger, which is planned to take place not later than 2026.
Among the preparatory measures are a common music director, an orchestra academy for both orchestras, a common baroque ensemble with musicians from both orchestras, a common ensemble for contemporary music, a yearly common concert as well as a common concert series.
