2019 führte das Royal New Zealand Ballet mit enormem Publikumserfolg das Ballett Hänsel und Gretel der neuseeländischen Komponistin Claire Cowan auf. Fast 30.000 Ballettfans sahen die Vorstellungen während der fünfwöchigen Tournee in ausverkauften Sälen im ganzen Land. Später, während der COVID-19-Lockdowns, wurde dieses Publikum auf das Online-Publikum erweitert – wo fast 150.000 Haushalte die Produktion verfolgten.

Danach hat das New Zealand Symphony Orchestra die Musik des Balletts aufgenommen. Im Orchester fällt eine Percussion-Sektion auf, in der neben den normalen Instrumenten auch Töpfe und Pfannen, Musikknochen und ein Fahrradhorn enthalten sind.

Die 37-jährige Claire Cowan komponiert für den Film und den Konzertsaal. Ihr Sinn fürs Orchestrieren ist unbestreitbar groß. Und sie hat Ideen. Das alles gibt ihrem Ballett ungemein viel Flair. Die Musik ist einfallsreich, farbenfroh und sehr klangmalerisch. Meistens ist sie zart und kristallin, manchmal auch brillant und kraftvoll, durchgehend evokativ und bezaubernd.

In 2019, the Royal New Zealand Ballet performed Hansel and Gretel, a ballet by New Zealand composer Claire Cowan, to enormous audience success. Nearly 30,000 ballet fans saw the performances during the five-week tour in sold-out venues across the country. Later, during the COVID-19 lockdown, this audience was extended to online audiences, and people from nearly 150,000 homes watched the production.
The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra then recorded the music of the ballet. Noticeable in the orchestra is a percussion section that includes pots and pans, musical bones and a bicycle horn, in addition to the normal instruments.
The 37-year-old Claire Cowan composes for the film and the concert hall. Her sense of orchestration is undeniably great, and she has a lot of imagination, all of which adds immense flair to her ballet. The music is inventive, colourful and very narrative. It is mostly delicate and crystalline, sometimes brilliant and powerful, evocative and enchanting throughout.
