British conductor Frank Shipway (79) was killed in a highway accident on the A342 when his Jaguar had a collision with a Vauxhall Astravan traveling in the opposite direction. He died yesterday at a Southampton hospital. Trained by John Barbirolli and supported by Herbert von Karajan and Lorin Maazel, Shipway began his conducting career with the Berlin Opera in 1973, though he also worked with the Glyndebourne Festival Opera and the National English Opera. His symphonic concerts with the Cleveland Orchestra, the Philharmonia Orchestra and Italy’s National Symphony Orchestra of the RAI increased his reputation.
