Einen derart guten Bruckner mit dem sicherlich nicht besten der britischen Orchester unter einem spanischen Dirigenten zu hören, hatte ich mir nicht erwartet und schon gar nicht in Bruckners vielleicht schwierigster Symphonie.

Hier liegt uns nun (neun Jahre nach der Aufnahme!) eine kontrastreiche, scharf umrissene, durch und durch kraftvolle Interpretation vor, in der nichts überdimensioniert wird, aber auch nichts unterbetont bleibt. Die Tempi sind nicht zu schnell und nicht zu langsam, der musikalische Fluss ist geordnet und zusammenhängend, der Orchesterklang ist bestens ausbalanciert, transparent und schlank, mit viel federndem Schwung sehr dynamisch.

Die positive, frohgemute Grundstimmung der Symphonie kommt weitaus stärker zum Ausdruck als in Vergleichseinspielungen, ja es gibt in dieser Interpretation etwas von Enthusiasmus und spektakulärer Brillanz, die dieser ‘kecken’ Symphonie gut stehen.

To hear such a good Bruckner with what is certainly not the best of the British orchestras under a Spanish conductor was not something I expected, and certainly not in what is perhaps Bruckner’s most difficult symphony. Here we have now (nine years after the recording!) a contrasting, sharply defined, thoroughly powerful interpretation in which nothing is overdone but nothing is underemphasized either. The tempi are neither too fast nor too slow, the musical flow is orderly and coherent, and the orchestral sound is well balanced, transparent and lean, with plenty of bouncy momentum, very dynamic too. The positive, joyful mood of the symphony is expressed far more strongly than in comparative recordings, indeed there is something of the enthusiasm and spectacular brilliance in this interpretation that suits this ‘perky’ symphony very well.
