Als Teil der Profil- Bruckner-Edition 2024 erscheint nun Gerd Schallers Interpretation der Vierten Symphony in der Fassung von 1874. Bereits in der Bamberger Aufnahme von Jakub Hrusa hatten wir begeistert von den phänomenalen Farben dieser Urfassung berichtet. Dieser Farbenreichtum findet sich auch hier, aber er wirkt anders, nicht ganz so detailreich, und daran ist wohl der Aufnahmeort schuld. Schallers Einspielung entstand live in der Abteikirche Ebrach. Obwohl nicht direkt unangenehm, nimmt der Hall der Kirche einiges von der Schärfe der Konturen, und da Schaller auch etwas anders atmet, nicht ganz so schlank wie Hrusa, wirkt die Musik nicht so unwiderstehlich frisch und lebendig wie in der Bamberger Aufnahme, die in der Kategorie Symphonische Musik den Preis der International Classical Music Awards gewann.
Dennoch ist dies eine gute Aufnahme und sie zeugt von Schallers tiefer Kenntnis der Symphonie und von Bruckners Musik allgemein. Die Philharmonie Festiva spielt auf sehr hohem Niveau und sehr engagiert.
As part of the Bruckner Edition 2024, Profil releases Gerd Schaller’s interpretation of the Fourth Symphony in the 1874 version. We had already reported enthusiastically on the phenomenal colors of this original version in Jakub Hrusa’s Bamberg recording. Basically there is a great richness of color also in Schaller’s recording, but it seems different, not quite as rich in detail, and the recording venue is probably to blame for that. Schaller’s recording was made live in the Ebrach Abbey Church. Although not directly unpleasant, the reverberation of the church takes away some of the sharpness of the contours, and since Schaller also breathes somewhat differently, not quite as leanly as Hrusa, the music does not seem as irresistibly fresh and lively as in the Bamberg recording, which won the International Classical Music Awards in the Symphonic Music category.
Still, this is a fine recording, and it is a testament to Schaller’s deep knowledge of the symphony and of Bruckner’s music in general. The Philharmonie Festiva plays at a very high level and with great commitment.
