After the suspension of the funding by the Regional Council, the association administrating the National Orchestra and the Opera in Montpellier, France, is in a financial crisis. The musicians and the employees are concerned about their future and, considering the deficit of 700.000 Euros, they fear that their salaries could not be paid at the end of the month. The Regional Council’s money was blocked due to a pending reform of the statutes governing the association.

The unions of the Philharmonic Orchestra of the French Radio in Paris have called a second strike for next Friday. The first strike led to the cancellation of last Friday’s concert at Pleyel, and now the next performance is likely to be canceled too. The orchestra musicians protest the dismissing of their artistic director Eric Montalbetti and the plans to merge the management of their orchestra with the one of the ‘Orchestre National de France’, the second radio orchestra in Paris.

By cutting subventions, the City of Cordoba and the Andalusian government bring the Cordoba Orchestra in a critical situation. The orchestra, one of the most recognized in Spain, is suffering economically because of budgetary cuts of almost 40%. Read More →

Der weltbekannte Kanon ‘Frère Jacques’ (Bruder Jakob), den u.a Mahler in seiner Ersten Symphonie benutzt, soll vom französischen Komponisten Jean-Philippe Rameau stammen. Das berichtet die Tageszeitung ‘La Croix’ aufgrund von Forschungsarbeiten der Musikwissenschaftlerin Sylvie Bouissou. Die erste Veröffentlichung des Kanons sei zwar erst 1811 erfolgt, doch der Verlag, die ‘Société du Caveau’, sei bereits 1720 gegründet worden, und Rameau sei in dieser Vereinigung Mitglied gewesen.

Das Projekt der Vereinigung ‘Zuflucht’ soll Menschen unterschiedlicher Herkunft mit dem gemeinsamen Ziel der Aufführung zusammenführen. Die 182 Mitglieder des Orchesters und des Chors der Römischen Oper protestieren gegen kollektive Kündigung und gegen das Outsourcing der beiden Ensembles. Gestern demonstrierten sie in der italienischen Hauptstadt. Sie wollen jetzt Rekurs gegen die Massenkündigung einreichen. Bisher war in Italien noch nie ein ganzes Orchester gekündigt worden. Der Fall ist präzedenzlos und wird jetzt italienische Gerichte beschäftigen.

After four weeks of a lockout with no negotiations, the management and the musicians of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra have agreed to federal mediation. The U.S. Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS) announced Friday that it will provide mediation services to both sides starting next week. “In response to a joint request from the parties, the FMCS will provide mediation to the orchestra musicians and management with the goal of helping them reach a mutually acceptable resolution to the issues that divide them,” the agency said in a statement.

In Geneva, a foundation has been set up to prepare and coordinate the project of a new concert hall which should, once it is built and completed, replace the 125 years old and not really up to date Victoria Hall. The new hall will be built without public funding. The ‘Fondation pour la Cité de la musique de Genève’ would like to add to the concert hall a new building for Geneva’s High School for Music which would explain the name ‘Cité de la musique’ reminding, of course, the concept developed in Paris. In the new hall, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, a partner in the project, would be the orchestra in residence.
