The board of the Minnesota Orchestra is still split about what to do with Osmo Vänskä, the former Music Director. According to the ‘Star Tribune’, part of the board would like Vänskä to take a limited role as a principal guest conductor without administrative duties, another part is in favor of getting him back as Music Director. Vänskä’s position is in any case depending on what CEO Michael Henson will do. Vänska will for sure not be back when Henson remains in his job.
Noch ist sie vom Bariton Erwin Schrott nicht geschieden, und schon hat sie sich verlobt: Auf seiner Facebook-Seite kündigte Tenor Yusif Eyvazov an, er habe sich mit der Sopranistin Anna Netrebko verlobt. Gefunkt hat es zwischen den beiden wohl in der Ewigen Stadt. Der aus Baku stammende Tenor war Netrebkos Des Grieux in ‘Manon’ an der Römischen Oper.

Ein Betrunkener hat der ‘L.A. Times’ zufolge am Freitagabend in der ‘Walt Disney Concert Hall’ die Unterbrechung eines Konzerts des ‘Los Angeles Philharmonic’ unter Gustavo Dudamel nötig gemacht. Der stark alkoholisierte Mann ließ sich vom Personal nicht abhalten, nach Konzertbeginn in den Saal zu gehen, wo es zu einer lautstarken Auseinandersetzung und Handgreiflichkeiten kam. Gustavo Dudamel unterbrach die Aufführung von John Coriglianos Erster Symphonie und verließ die Bühne. Das Konzert wurde fortgesetzt, als der Betrunkene aus dem Saal gebracht worden war.
Am 13. März beginnen die Tarifverhandlungen über die Lohnerhöhungen für die rund zwei Millionen Beschäftigten der bundesdeutschen Kommunen, darunter auch die angestellten künstlerischen und nichtkünstlerischen Beschäftigten der Theater und Orchester. On March 16th, 2014, dozens of classical musicians from Venezuela and other parts of the world (among them pianist Gabriela Montero) will unite, instruments in hand, to perform the first ‘Concert For Liberty Of Venezuela’ in the city of Berlin. Fiorenza Cossotto
Cesena based ‘Associazione Marietta Alboni’ awarded the Italian mezzosoprano Fiorenza Cossotto the first ‘Contr’alto di donna’ Prize, presented in honor of the great contralto Marietta Alboni (1826 -1894). The award ceremony took place at Teatro Bonci in Cesena (between Ravenna and Rimini). The jury said, the award for Fiorenza Cossotto has been « more than deserved, almost an obligation ». The today almost 69 years old singer sung many roles that were part also of Alboni’s repertoire.

The Tokyo Philharmonic has the longest history and tradition of any orchestra in Japan, having been originally established in Nagoya in 1911. As the original plans made for its centenary celebrations in 2011 were scuttled due to devastating earthquake and tsunami, the celebration was delayed by several years. Marion Thorpe died on 6 March at the age of 87. Born into a Jewish Viennese family, the father having been a musician, Marion Thorpe studied at London’s Royal College of Music. She played the piano professionally, not as a soloist but forming a duo with Catherine Shanks. She became a good friend of Benjamin Britten. Through him she met her first husband, Lord Harewood, the artistic director of the Edinburgh and Leeds festivals from whom she divorced later. In 1963, she and piano teacher Fanny Waterman started the Leeds International Piano Competition. The pianist Moura Lympany introduced Marion to ther politician Jeremy Thorpe. They married in 1973.
