A heavy controversy erupted as reaction to an article written by Michael Morreale from Canada’s Broadcasting Company CBC, titled “Classical music’s shocking gender gap”. In his text, Morreale affirms that in Canada’s musical life, talented women are being prevented from having the successful careers they deserve. The Dutch conductor Jan Willem de Vriend (*1962) has been named music director of the ‘Residentie Orkest Den Haag’. The contract is starting on 1 August 2015 and runs through 2019. De Vriend is also the music director of ‘Het Nederlands Symfonie Orkest’.

Der Frankokanadier Yves Abel wird neuer Chefdirigent der Nordwestdeutschen Philharmonie mit Sitz in Herford. Er tritt am 1. Januar 2015 die Nachfolge von Eugene Tzigane an, der die Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie seit 2010 geleitet hat. Der in Toronto geborene und in New York lebende Yves Abel war von 2005 bis 2011 Erster Gastdirigent der Deutschen Oper Berlin und ist international sowohl im Opern- als auch im Konzertbereich tätig. Er ist Gründer und musikalischer Direktor der ‘Opéra Francais’ de New York, mit der er selten aufgeführte französische Opern wiederbelebt.
Der spanische Dirigent Pablo Heras-Casado ist ein sehr beschäftigter Musiker. Das geht aus einer Pressemitteilung seiner PR-Agentur hervor. Im April dieses Jahres wird Heras-Casado seine enge musikalische Beziehung mit dem Freiburger Barockorchester, nach der gemeinsamen erfolgreichen Veröffentlichung der Schubert Symphonien in 2013, vielfältig weiter vertiefen. Der spanische Komponist Cristóbal Halffter wird mit dem Kulturpreis 2014 der Landeshauptstadt Kiel ausgezeichnet. Er erhält den mit 10.000 Euro dotierten Preis für sein Werk, das auch in Kiel große Erfolge feierte. Zwei seiner drei Opern hat Halffter als Auftragswerke für das Kieler Opernhaus geschrieben. In the ongoing protest by seasonal employees over proposed changes to labor rules for theater workers, Union members occupied the old building of the National Opera in Paris, Palais Garnier in the city center. Police said no arrests have been made and no violence was reported. However Palais Garnier remains closed today until 1 p.m. At the Bastille Opera, Mozarts ‘Zauberflöte’ was presented yesterday evening only in a concert version.
Michael Henson, the much hated president and CEO of the Minnesota Orchestra, will step down in August. Henson, who joined the orchestra in 2007, became a conflict figure during the 16-month labor dispute that ended in January. Musicians as well as the former Music Director Osmo Vänskä asked Henson to quit the orchestra. Vänskä will conduct the orchestra March 27-29, for the first time in almost two years.
