The Metropolitan Opera in New York has been selling just 79 percent of its seats in the 2012-13 season. Part of this decreasing attendance might be the success of the Live in HD” movie theater presentations in the United States and around the world. In any case, the loss at the box office is not dramatic, since the opera house has raised more money from donors and earned more from the movie presentations.

Bei der ersten gesamtdeutschen Erfassung 1992 wurden noch 168 öffentlich finanzierte, regelmäßig spielende Orchester gezählt. 37 Kulturorchester sind also faktisch von der Landkarte verschwunden. Der österreichische Journalist und Musikkritiker Karl Löbl ist am 27. Januar im Alter von 83 Jahren gestorben. Löbl arbeitete für diverse österreichische Zeitungen sowie für das Österreichische Fernsehen (ORF). Er veröffentlichte auch Bücher: 1965 verfasste er mit ‘Das Wunder Karajan’ ein Werk über den Dirigenten Herbert von Karajan. Außerdem schrieb er gemeinsam mit Robert Werba ‘Opern auf Schallplatten’ (1983) ein viel gerühmtes Lexikon mit Kommentaren zu den einzelnen Aufnahmen.

Apollon Musagète has founded a festival while its spiritual mentor, Apollo, is the inspiration for many of the key works it commissions. Sven-Eric Bechtolf dementiert eine Zeitungsmeldung, laut der er den Salzburger Festspielen als Interimsleiter nicht zur Verfügung stehen könnte. Wörtlich heißt es in der Pressemitteilung: « Entgegen der Meldung der Bildzeitung vom 28.01.2014, die besagt, dass ich ab der Spielzeit 2015/16 Intendant des Schauspielhauses in Düsseldorf werde, lege ich Wert auf die Feststellung, dass ich in den Spielzeiten 2014/15 und 2015/16 mit großer Freude meiner Tätigkeit bei den Salzburger Festspielen nachgehen werde. Dieser Umstand schließt selbstverständlich eine Beschäftigung an anderen Häusern aus. »

Kevin Mallon

Opera Lyra, Ottawa, has appointed the British conductor Kevin Mallon as its interim artistic director replacing Tyrone Paterson, who will step down at the end of the currentr season. Mallon, who is also the music director of Ottawa’s Thirteen Strings chamber orchestra, has been hired to a one year contract which begins July 1. Mallon is also music director for the Aradia Ensemble of Toronto which he founded and he is the conductor of Orchestra Toronto. Mallon is known for his numerous recordings with Naxos.

The Sacramento Opera and Philharmonic Orchestra had come near the point where the decision to end activities would have had to be taken. Now, a generous donor, the Joyce and Jim Teel Family Foundation saved them from the collapse. The 500’000 Dollar donation allows the ensemble to continue playing concerts and staging operas.

French-Nigerian soprano Omo Bello won First Prize in the general category, First Prize for the French 19^th century opera repertoire and the Audience Award at the Third Paris Opera Competition. In the general category, the second Prize was awarded to the baritone Johan Choir, Korea, while Russian mezzo-soprano Maria Kataeva received the 3^rd prize.
