Karel Mark Chichon and Elina Garanca have announced the birth of their daughter, Cristina Sophie Chichon, a sister for Catherine Louise. Cristina was born on 10 January 2014 and both mother and little Cristina are doing very well.

Beim Abschlusskonzert des 12. Operettenworkshops am 11. Januar in Leipzig wurde der ‘Deutsche Operettenpreis’ an estnischen Dirigenten Mihhail Gerts (*1984) verliehen. Mihhail Gerts ist derzeit als Kapellmeister an der Estnischen Nationaloper in Tallinn tätig. Von 2005 – 2007 war er stellvertretender Chefdirigent des Estnischen Nationalen Männerchores RAM.

Die ‘Folle Journée de Nantes’, die dieses Jahr vom 29. Januar bis zum 2. Februar unter dem Motto « Amerikanische Musik des XX. Jahrhunderts’ steht, ist schon vor dem Veranstaltungsbeginn ein Erfolg. American-Armenian conductor Aram Gharabekian passed away yesterday, January 10, at the age of 58. Born in the US in 1955, he graduated from the New England Conservatory with a Master’s degree in Composition, and continued his postgraduate studies in Musical Phenomenology at Mainz University in Germany.  He studied conducting with Franco Ferrara in Italy, and was one of a few pupils of the legendary conductor Sergiu Celibidache.  Read More →

Australian conductor Bryan Fairfax, well known for his championing of little known or neglected works, has died at the age of 83. He is associated with the works of Havergal Brian, and he conducted the world premiere of Brian’s Symphony No. 1, Gothic in 1961. Brian’s Symphony No. 18 was written especially for Fairfax and the semi-professional Polyphonia Orchestra he founded. His UK premieres include major works by Gustav Mahler, Dmitri Shostakovich, Carl Nielsen, Sergei Rachmaninov, Franz Schmidt and Percy Grainger.

Tim Penrose

All Saints Church, West Dulwich, has announced the death of their Director of Music, Tim Penrose, who died suddenly after a brief illness on Thursday 9 January 2014 at the age of 64.  Penrose started his musical career as a quirister at Winchester College and went on to study voice and organ at Trinity College of Music, where he obtained his Fellowship. He was a ‘Gentleman-in-Ordinary’ to Her Majesty’s Chapel Royal for three years and was chosen by the Greater London Arts Association as one of the ‘Young Musicians of the Year’. He established himself as a well known countertenor. He recorded CDs with Andrew Parrott and John Eliot Gardiner.
