Der 80-jährige Dirigent Claudio Abbado wurde von italienischen Staatspräsidenten zum Senator auf Lebenszeit genannt. Diese sehr seltene Auszeichnung, die es seit 1949 gibt, soll Persönlichkeiten ehren, die sich ganz besonders um Italien verdient gemacht haben. Auch wenn es vor allem ein Ehrentitel ist, kann der ‘Senator auf Lebenszeit’ durchaus an den Arbeiten des Senats teilnehmen und sich auch an den Abstimmungen beteiligen. Zur Zeit gibt es sechs solcher Senatoren, gegenüber 375 ‘normalen’ Amtsträgern.

When Russian conductor Vasily Petrenko told the Oslo newspaper ‘Aftenposten’ that orchestras respond better to male conductors because men « often have less sexual energy and can focus more on the music », adding that « a sweet girl on the podium can make one’s thoughts drift towards something else », he raised a worldwide storm of protest. Now the British newspaper The Gurdian asked him to resign:  » Both of his orchestras (Oslo and Liverpool, note of the editor) have a high global profile and he is a role model for musicians around the world. For this reason, he should be forced to resign from both positions over these archaic and damaging comments. »

The Metropolitan Opera in New York refused to dedicate it’s Eugen Onegin premiere to Russian Gays. Now activists are asking such a dedication of this season’s opening night from the San Francisco Opera. Moreover, members of ‘Gays Without Borders’ and ‘BoycottRussianVodka.com’ will be holding a an informational vigil on Friday, September 6 at 7:00 pm at the SF Opera’s Gala with Arrigo Boito’s Mefistofele. Among the performers is out lesbian soprano and activist Patricia Racette, who has also been asked to dedicate her performance to Russian LGBTs. So far, both organizations await a reply from the SF Opera and Racette.

Ivan Tasovac, General Manager of the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra, has been named Minister of Culture in Serbian government. Tasovac (47), who has been running the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra since 2001, accepted the offer from Serbian Prime Minister Ivica Dacic. Tasovac is known for having achieved much success with the Belgrade Philharmonic. On the other hand, this former pianist was in the news earlier this year when conductor Alexander Rahbari quit the Belgrade Philharmonic, accusing Tasovac of despotic behavior.

Apocalypse to come: We read in the Star Tribune that Richard Davis, chairman of the Minnesota Orchestra’s negotiating team, said management « will stand firm in the 11-month lockout, despite the looming prospect of outcomes once deemed unthinkable – including the departure of Music Director Osmo Vänskä, the cancellation of key concerts at Carnegie Hall and delaying the start of the 2013-14 season in the newly remodeled Orchestra Hall. » So, now, every worst case scenario is possible, including the disbanding of the Orchestra.

The Edinburgh International Festival sold this year the highest number of tickets since ten years. Seat occupation in 220 performances was up to an average of 80%. A total 158,500 tickets were issued, up 22,000 on last year. Box office income was £2.43 million, the lowest since Jonathan Mills took over as director in 2006. This is due to an increased number of cheaper tickets.

Der japanische Komponist Makoto Moroi ist am 2. September im Alter von 82 Jahren gestorben. Moroi stammte aus Tokio und wurde dort am 17. Dezember 1930 in einer Musikerfamilie geboren. Er studierte Komposition bei Tomojirō Ikenouchi. Er unterrichtete Gregorianik am Musikinstitut von Hiroshima und Komposition am Konservatorium von Tokio. Er komponierte Orchestermusik, Opern, Vokalmusik, Kammer- und Instrumentalmusik. Aufnahmen seiner Kompositionen gibt es auf japanischen Labeln sowie auf Naxos.

Die heftig kritisierten Reformpläne für die Musikhochschulen in Baden-Württemberg werden abgeändert. Das sagte Ministerpräsident Winfried Kretschmann (Grüne) am Dienstag in Mannheim. Zwar will er daran festhalten, die angeblich überschüssigen 500 Studienplätze abzubauen, aber es müsse alles noch einmal überdacht werden. Und es werde alles moderat geschehen. Naja, warten wir’s mal ab. Und eigentlich wäre es doch besser gewesen, wenn die Politiker zuerst überlegt und dann angekündigt hätten , statt andersrum.

Der belgische Intendant Gérard Mortier, gegenwärtig Chef des ‘Teatro Real’ in Madrid, muss sich nach einer Operation in Berlin wegen Krebs einer dreimonatigen Behandlung unterziehen. Der 69-jährige Musikmanager plant zwar, nach dieser Zeit wieder an seinen Arbeitsplatz zurückzukehren, hat aber, wie er in einem Interview erklärte, der spanischen Regierung die Namen von sechs Personen angegeben, die laut ihm für seine Nachfolge in Frage kommen. Giacomo Meyerbeer

Der 1791 von Berliner Eltern in der Nähe von Berlin geborene Opernkomponist Giacomo Meyerbeer bekommt eine Gedenktafel in der deutschen Hauptstadt. Die Enthüllung findet am  9. September am Pariser Platz statt.  Die Laudatio hält Dietmar Schwarz, Intendant der Deutschen Oper Berlin. Meyerbeer wurde als Sohn des jüdischen Zuckerproduzenten und Bankiers Jacob Herz Beer und dessen Frau Amalie Meyer in einem Reisewagen geboren, mit dem seine Mutter von Berlin nach Frankfurt unterwegs war. Ab 1810 nannte sich der Komponist Giacomo Meyerbeer.
