Zum 25-jährigen Bestehen der Orchesterakademie der Berliner Staatskapelle dirigierte Daniel Barenboim persönlich das Geburtstagskonzert in der Berliner Staatsoper. In einer Ansprache sagte der Dirigent, er sei ein Jahr lang krank gewesen, nun aber gehe es ihm wieder gut. Barenboim dirigierte das Konzert im Stehen, was sicherlich ein gutes Zeichen war.

Austrian-Uruguayan conductor Carlos Kalmar, 65, currently the principal conductor for the Cleveland Institute of Music, has been accused of “inappropriate behavior.” Carlos Kalmar, who served as music director of the Oregon Symphony for 18 years, has been in the Cleveland position since 2021 (he’s also the institute’s director of orchestral studies). The French soprano Natalie Dessay announced the end of her career on France Musique. She wants to retire from the stage in 2025, when she will celebrate her 60th birthday. For the occasion, she will make a farewell tour with the pianist Philippe Cassard.

The 34-year-old Canadian conductor Jordan de Souza is to become General Music Director in Dortmund from 2025, the newspaper Ruhrnachrichten said. Born in Toronto, de Souza studied conducting at McGill University, Montreal and made his conducting debut aged 20 with Bach St John Passion. Read More →

The 2023 Birgit Nilsson Stipendium is awarded to Swedish mezzo-soprano Ida Ränzlöv, who receives 200.000 Swedish Crowns (c. 18.000 Euro). Ida Ränzlöv studied at the Malmö Academy of Music and Royal College of Music Opera Studio in London, graduating in 2018. She joined the Staatsoper Stuttgart as an ensemble member in 2019.
