The Glasgow-born conductor James Loughran has died. He was 92 years old. Loughran was chief conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra from 1965 to 1971. He became principal conductor of The Hallé as of the 1971–72 season, succeeding Sir John Barbirolli. He held the post until 1983, and was conductor laureate of The Hallé from 1983 to 1991.
