Hungarian violist György Konrád has died, almost 100 years old. Born in Szeged on 18 October 1924, Konrad was a member of the Tátrai String Quartet, but he also played a major role in all the leading Hungarian symphony orchestras. After pleading guilty to sexual misconduct involving a minor boy, British conductor Jan Latham-Koenig, 70, was given a 14-month suspended sentence and two years’ probation by a London court. His lawyer said the case had had a « devastating effect » on the conductor and his career, and that he was now undergoing « intensive therapy ».
The Danville Symphony Orchestra (Illinois) has announced Matthew Sheppard as the organization’s next Music Director. Sheppard was selected after a yearlong search process which included over 60 applicants. Sheppard is the artistic director and primary conductor for several ensembles and youth orchestras in the Chicagoland area.
