Polish composer and conductor Krzysztof Penderecki was scheduled to conduct his 8th symphony and his 2d Violin Concerto at the Enescu Festival in Bucharest yesterday evening with the Romanian National Radio Orchestra and Choir. On Friday night, the musician had to be hospitalized and subsequently was too weak to conduct the concert which he attended, greeting the audience from a box in the hall.

American composer Christopher Rouse passed away on Saturday, September 21, at age 70 in his native town of Baltimore. Rouse was one of America’s most prominent composers. The Cleveland Orchestra has announced a five-year extension of its contract with Music Director Franz Welser-Möst, 59, through the 2016/2027 season. The Austrian conductor will then have a tenure of 25 years, one year longer than that of George Szell. He succeeded Christoph von Dohnanyi in 2002.
