The Philharmonia Orchestra in London announced the appointment of Santtu-Matias Rouvali as its next Principal Conductor, only the sixth person to hold the title in its 75-year history. Following in the footsteps of Riccardo Muti, appointed as the Principal Conductor of the Philharmonia in 1973 at 32, 33-year-old Rouvali is one of the youngest-ever artists appointed as Principal Conductor of a London orchestra. Rouvali will take up the position for the 2021/22 season. His five-year contract with the Philharmonia will see him working with the Orchestra for 10 weeks a year.

Markus Hinterhäuser

Das Kuratorium der Salzburger Festspiele hat den Vertrag mit Markus Hinterhäuser (61) um weitere fünf Jahre bis 2026 verlängert. Der laufende Vertrag mit dem Pianisten endet zwar erst am 30. September 2021, doch wegen des 100-Jahr-Jubiläums der Festspiele im kommenden Jahr entschloss sich das Kuratorium  für eine rasche Ausschreibung, um das Jubiläumsjahr frei von Personaldebatten zu halten. Die Entscheidung für Hinterhäuser fiel  einstimmig. Beschlossen wurde ebenfalls das Budget für das Jubiläumsfestival 2020. Es beläuft sich auf 66,5 Millionen Euro, 4,7 Millionen mehr als 2019.

At the first China International Music Competition in Beijing, Tony Siqi Yun, an 18-year-old Canadian, won First Prize – worth $150,000 plus management by Opus 3 in the US and Europe, and Armstrong Music and Arts in China. Second Prize ($75,000) went to the 17-year-old Russian Alexander Malofeev while Third Prize ($30,000) went to the 24-year-old American MacKenzie Melemed.

The Appleton (Wisconsin) based Fox Valley Symphony Orchestra has appointed Kevin Sütterlin, a 30-year-old German conductor as Music Director. Sütterlin is Director of orchestral activities and assistant professor of instrumental conducting at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota. He is Music Director and conductor of the Concordia Orchestra and Concordia Opera.

After this year’s Gala Concert of the International Classical Music Awards was broadcast by the Swiss Radio, other radio stations are doing so as well. MDR Kultur has the concert in its program on Friday, 24 May at 20h05. Radio 100,7 from Luxembourg will broadcast the Gala in its Euroradio series, on Thursday 06 June at 20h00.
