American conductor Timothy Muffitt, 47, who was Music Director of the Baton Rouge Symphony for 20 years has announced that he will step down at the end of the  2019-2020 season. The BRSO board will designate Muffitt as music director laureate in recognition of his contributions.

Die kasachische Komponistin Aigerim Seilova erhält den mit 20.000 Euro dotierten Hindemith-Preis 2019. »Aigerim Seilova besticht durch eine hohe Professionalität im kompositorischen Handwerk und durch eine originelle Klangsprache, die auf faszinierende Weise eruptive Spannung und ruhiges Fließen verbindet. Sie hat sich erfolgreich in unterschiedlichen Stilen ausprobiert. Dabei hat sie eine eigene Handschrift entwickelt, die neue Wege beschreitet, ohne ihre musikalischen Wurzeln zu verleugnen«, sagt Dr. Christian Kuhnt, Intendant des Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival und Vorsitzender der Jury des Hindemith-Preises.

In Sankt-Petersburg steht eine ehemalige Wohnung von Dmitri Shostakovich in der Kronverskaya-Straße zum Verkauf. Der Verkaufspreis beträgt 360.000 Euro, was für eine 240 Quadratmeter Wohnung in dieser Lage recht teuer sein soll, berichten russische Medien. Die Wohnung, in der Shostakovich von 1937 bis 1941 lebte, wechselte angeblich schon mehrmals den Besitzer.

The Mahler Chamber Orchestra announced that it will be Mitsuko Uchida’s exclusive orchestral touring partner for the next five years. The release says: « From 2019 to 2023, we will bring our programmes – based around Mozart’s piano concertos and also featuring works for chamber orchestra – to multiple cities in Europe, North America and Asia. We look forward to returning to the prestigious Mozartwoche in Salzburg, Southbank Centre in London and Carnegie Hall in New York for performances in each of the upcoming years. Read More →

This year’s Long Thibaud Crespin competition is for pianists, and the registration just opened und is possible until March 17. Pianist Marie-Josèphe Jude is in charge of the preselection, organized from April 17 to July 2 in Tokyo, Seoul, Shanghai, Hamburg, Moscow, Vienna, Paris, Oslo and New York. The competition will take place in Paris from November 8 to 16, 2019. The jury will be chaired by Martha Argerich.

The National State Opera and Ballet Theatre of Vladikavkaz (North Ossetia-Alania, Russia) will have the name of conductor Valery Gergiev, Russian media reported. Gergiev, who spent most of his early childhood in Vladikavkaz, is said to have contributed to the cultural development of the city.
