Radio France has reduced its funding for the festival Radio France Occitanie Montpellier by 50%, bringing it from €300.000 to €150.000, with another reduction in 2020. Meanwhile the Région Occitanie is stepping in with more funding to ensure the festival’s survival. The decision of the broadcaster comes after its own public funding is reduced by €4 million in 2019.

French composer, organist, pianist, and pedagogue Jean Guillou died on January 26 at the age of 88. Born in Angers in 1930 he became organist at the church St. Serge in his home town at the age of 12. The BBC Symphony Orchestra has appointed young, Finnish conductor Dalia Stasevska (*1984) as its Principal Guest Conductor. She will join the current BBC SO conducting team of Sakari Oramo (Chief Conductor), Sir Andrew Davis (Conductor Laureate), and Semyon Bychkov (Günter Wand Conducting Chair).

American conductor Timothy Muffitt, 47, who was Music Director of the Baton Rouge Symphony for 20 years has announced that he will step down at the end of the  2019-2020 season. The BRSO board will designate Muffitt as music director laureate in recognition of his contributions.
