Gonzalo Farias

The Virginia Symphony Orchestra has announced the hiring of Gonzalo Farias as assistant conductor, effective from June of this year. Farias, a native of Chile, a graduate of the Universities of Chile and Illinois and the New England Conservatory is currently a post-graduate student of Marin Alsop at the Peabody Conservatory. He is a former First Prize winner at the Claudio Arrau International Piano Competition – and currently serves a fellowship conducting position with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.

In an interview with La Lettre du Musicien, Bruno Julliard, first deputy Mayor of the city of Paris in charge of culture, announced that the city plans to end the recruitment of Conservatoire students by drawing lots in 2020, in order to allow everybody interested to have a place at a conservatoire. This involves the recruitment of professors and the construction of new buildings.

Mit einer öffentlichen Performance haben die Musiker der Mittelsächsischen Philharmonie Freiberg (Sachsen) am heutigen Mittwoch ihrem Warnstreik Nachdruck verliehen. Vor dem Theatergebäude am Buttermarkt musizierten Orchestermitglieder. Sie trugen Streikwesten und hatten Gewerkschaftsfahnen der Deutschen Orchestervereinigung (DOV) dabei. Beim WDR in Köln wurde heute der künftige Chefdirigent des WDR Sinfonieorchesters ab der Saison 2019/20 vorgestellt. Es ist der 37-jährige Rumäne Cristian Macelaru. Cristian Macelaru war Konzertmeister des ‘Miami Symphony Orchestra’ und Geiger im ‘Houston Symphony Orchestra’, bevor er 2010 mit Puccinis ‘Madama Butterfly’ an der ‘Houston Grand Opera’ sein Operndebüt als Dirigent feierte. Born in 1929 in Warsaw, Polish-Australian violinist Wanda Wilkomirska died yesterday (1 May), aged 89. In young years she was mentored by Henryk Szeryng. She won prizes at competitions in Geneva (1946), Budapest (1949) and Leipzig (the International Johann Sebastian Bach Competition, 1950; 2nd prize), and at the Wieniawski International Violin Competition. The City of Granada Orchestra in Spain is facing a very difficult financial situation, according to the Spanish magazine Codolario. It is said that the orchestra has debts of approximately 320 thousand euros and is indebted to musicians and suppliers with a delay in payments of 14 months.

Opéra Bastille, Paris

The National Opera in Paris, Opéra Bastille is closed since April 23 due to broken 18-ton-counterweight cables of a fire door on the stage. The reparation is apparently very difficult, since the management announced that Opéra Bastille will remain closed until May 13.
