In celebration of the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra’s 60th anniversary, the GSO launched its opening program of the 2017/18 season last Sunday (24/9) with the world premiere of Krzysztof Penderecki’s Symphony No. 6 (Chinese Poems), featuring baritone Chen-Ye Yuan. This Symphony No. 6, co-commissioned by the GSO and the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra, is inspired by Chinese literary culture, with German translations of Tang Dynasty poetry. The sold-out season-opening celebratory program at the Xinghai Concert Hall was led by GSO Music Director Long Yu.

The first-ever annual Young Artist Opera and Oratorio Competition will take place in July 2018 at the Apollo Theatre on the Island of Syros, Greece. It will be part of the Festival of the Aegean, MidAmerica Productions and MidAm International of New York announced. The competition is open to singers of all voice types between the ages of 22 and 32. The island of Syros is part of the Cyclades. Located 144 km southeast of Athens it has only 25,000 inhabitants.
