Opera Memphis has announced American conductor Michael Sakir as its new Music Director. Sakir, a California native, is succeeding outgoing Music Director Ben Makino. Sakir studied the Oberlin and the Boston Conservatories, and has focussed his activities on opera, guest conducting at major venues in the US.

The Montclair Orchestra has formally announced its inaugural season, consisting of five concerts at venues throughout Montclair, New Jersey. The inaugural concert will take place on October 22nd at Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church. An orchestra of 80 musicians will present an ambitious program of Operatic Connections, an homage to new Music Director David Chan’s background as concertmaster for the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in Manhattan. Latvian composer, conductor and pianist Peteris Plakidis died last Tuesday, at the age of 70. Born in 1947 in Riga, Latvia, he studied in his home country. From 1969-1974 Plakidis was musical director at the Latvian National Theatre. Read More →
Bei den ‘Achava-Festspielen Thüringen’ in Erfurt wird dieses Jahr die sogenannte ‘Geige von Buchenwald’ in einem Gesprächskonzert erklingen. Das Konzert hat eine lange Vorgeschichte. French Minister of Culture, Françoise Nyssen, told the members of the French Parliament that the Pass Culture of 500 euros intended for young people will be available next year. Russian composer Pavel Slobodkin died yesterday in Moscow. He was 73. Born in 1945 in Moscow into a family of musicians. In 1966, Slobodkin created one of the first vocal-instrumental ensembles in the country, ‘Merry Fellows’. In 2002 he created the Moscow Theatre and Chamber Centre Pavel Slobodkin. The chamber orchestra of the Pavel Slobodkin Centre has made numerous recordings which are internationally distributed.

The Verbier Festival ended on 6 August after 17 days, 57 concerts and more than 200 events. The festival welcomed up to 5,000 people a day, attending the various concerts, but also the Academy and Fest’Off events. In total more than 45,000 people attended the 24th edition.
