The 40th season of the Dresdner Musikfestspiele was extremely positive, according to the organizer: « From May 18 to June 18 Dresden was transformed into a vibrant meeting-place for about 1,500 artists from all over the world. » The festival organized 60 concerts at 22 venues, and those events had about 54,000 visitors. In 2016, 53 events had attracted 48,000 visitors. Furthermore, in 2017, ticket sales revenues soared by 38 percent, reaching € 1.4 million.
Pittsburgh philanthropists Pat and Michele Atkins have given the Pittsburgh Opera a $1.2 million donation, one of the largest in the company’s history. Donators want the donation to be called Pat and Michele Atkins Audience Development Fund. It will be spread out over four years.

Einem Bericht der ‘Süddeutschen Zeitung’ zufolge hat der Pianist Daniil Trifonov sämtliche Konzerte in Europa für die nächsten zwei Monate abgesagt. Eine offizielle Mitteilung gibt es dazu nicht, die Salzburger Festspiele haben die Trifonov-Konzerte weiterhin im Programm, und das ‘Verbier Festival’ führt seinen Namen immer noch auf der Webseite für ein Konzert am 24. Der Slowene Marko Letonja, 55, wird ab der Saison 2018/19 neuer Generalmusikdirektor in Bremen. Er übernimmt den Posten von Markus Poschner, der seinerseits das Bruckner-Orchester im österreichischen Linz übernimmt. Letonja ist seit 2012 Chefdirigent des ‘Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg’ sowie des ‘Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra’.

The jury of the Rachmaninov International Award have given prizes fpr 2016 achievements to Russian pianist Nikolai Lugansky for his special attention to the music of Sergei Rachmaninov and for his support for the Museum-estate of Sergei Rachmaninov in Ivanovka near Tambov, Russia, which used to be the summer residence of the composer between 1890 and 1917 (until his emigration). Due to the fact that the Theatre of the St. Petersburg Conservatory is closed for renovation since May 2015, performing in other locations becomes more and more difficult for the Conservatory’s Opera and Ballet Theatre. As a consequence the Conservatory simply dismissed 79 of its 228 employees. After the reconstruction of the building the Conservatory is supposed to expand the orchestra and the ballet again to its previous size.
