Benjamin Reiners wird 2017 1. Kapellmeister und stellvertretender Generalmusikdirektor am traditionsreiche Mannheimer Nationaltheater. Bis Ende 2016 ist er noch 2. Kapellmeister in Hannover. Reiners wurde 1983 in Duisburg geboren und erhielt seine Ausbildung an der Hochschule für Musik Köln und in der Kapellmeisterklasse von Professor Karl-Heinz Bloemeke an der Hochschule für Musik Detmold.

After two years of preparation the First Shanghai Isaac Stern International Violin Competition begins tomorrow, 16 August, at the Shanghai Symphony Hall. 24 candidates, mainly from Asia, face a jury comprising David Stern, Zakhar Bron, Martin Engstroem, Daniel Heifetz, Boris Kuschnir, Maxim Vengerov, among others. He said, according to press reports: « People think I am not far from death, but I will try to the maximum to prevent me from dying. » He also spoke about the music festival he created in Japan 22 years ago. The Saito Kinen Festival in Matsumoto (central Japan) is now called Seiji Ozawa Festival.

American soprano Patrice Munsel has died last Thursday at the age of 91. In 1943, aged 17, Munsel won an audition with the Metropolitan Opera in New York and became the youngest singer to make a debut at the Met. She performed on the Met stage more than 225 times. She is remembered, among other characters, for her Violetta, her Gilda and for her Adele in Johann Strauss’s Die Fledermaus.

Die bulgarische Mezzosopranistin Vesselina Kasarova hat ihren Auftritt in ‘Il matrimonio segreto’ bei den Innsbrucker Festwochen abgesagt. Grund dafür sei, dass sie bei einem versuchten Handtaschenraub verletzt wurde. Grund sei eine Verletzung, die entstand, als zwei Unbekannte versuchten, ihre Handtasche zu entwenden. Der Überfall fand am späten Montag Abend statt. Die Opernsängerin ist in die Schweiz zurückgekehrt, um sich von dem Überfall zu erholen.
