The contract of conductor Theodore Currentzis as artistic director of the Perm Opera has not been extended. His former contract ended on January 10. According to Russian press reports, Currentzis refused to sign even the second version of the new contract over differences on guaranties, the conductor wanted see included in his contract, notably the preservation of the funding of his opera house at current levels and the decision to undertake a complete renovation of the stage.

Am heutigen Mittwoch findet in der Stiftskirche in Baden-Baden eine private Trauerfeier für den am 5. Januar im Alter von 90 Jahren verstorbenen Pierre Boulez. Anschließend ist die Beisetzung im engsten Familienkreis geplant. Boulez wohnte seit vielen Jahren in Baden-Baden. Eine offizielle Trauerfeier ist für den Donnerstag in Paris geplant.

Philippe Jaroussky

French countertenor Philippe Jaroussky (37) has announced the death of his father Daniel Jaroussky (1941-2016) and cancelled a tour of Handel’s Partenope with performances in Paris, La Coruna, Amsterdam, Pamplona Essen and Madrid. Lawrence Zazzo will replace Jaroussky in Paris. The rest of the tour is on jeopardy.

Der deutsche Dirigent Alexander Liebreich (47) hat seinen Vertrag mit dem Nationalen Symphonieorchester des Polnischen Rundfunks in Katowice (NOSPR) verlängert und führt damit die erfolgreiche Zusammenarbeit bis 2018 fort. Die Position übernahm er 2012. Liebreich ist auch Chefdirigent des Münchener Kammerorchesters und hat eine Gastprofessur an der Hochschule für Musik und Theater München. In Katowice leitet er das Musikfestival ‘Katowice Kultura Natura’.

Beim Operettenworkshop in der Musikalischen Komödie Leipzig wurde dem 1990 geborenen Schweizer Dominic Limburg der diesjährige Deutsche Operettenpreis zugesprochen. Limburg studierte zunächst Klavier und Gesang, bevor er 2013 seine Dirigierausbildung bei Prof. Johannes Schlaefli an der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste aufnahm.

Genau in einem Jahr am 11. und 12. Januar 2017 wird das NDR Sinfonieorchester unter der Leitung von Thomas Hengelbrock das Eröffnungskonzert im Großen Saal geben. Riccardo Chailly

After being upset over the Giovanna d’Arco staging, Riccardo Chailly had made it very clear: at the Milan Scala he will not accept any staging that has not been discussed with him (i.e. approved by him) as the opera house’s music director. This led to the worst rumors about an upcoming staging of Puccini’s La Fanciulla del West. In fact, Chailly won his first battle. The Scala communicated that, having different views than Chailly, Graham Vick pulled out and was replaced by Robert Carsen.

Johan Halvorsen

James Mason, an employee of the Music Library at the University of Toronto, Canada, discovered a long lost Violin Concerto by Norwegian composer Johan Halvorsen. The Concerto was first performed in 1909 in the Netherlands by Canadian violinist Kathleen Parlow. She played it two more times that year, and probably there have been no performances of the concerto since. It was said, that the composer was unhappy with the reviews and destroyed the scores. The sore now found in Toronto must be a copy made for Parlow.
