Erik Satie

France may have a (rather silent) Erik Satie Foundation and also a website dedicated to the composer, yet one of the best known specialists of Satie’s work, Jean-Pierre Armengaud, together with composer Moritz Eggert and a number of other people, took the initiative to create an International Erik Satie Association based in Königsfeld (Black Forest, Germany). The goal of the association is to organize world-wide events devoted to the works and the memory of Erik Satie.

Xian Zhang (*1973) has been named Principal Guest Conductor of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. She will join for three years and conduct around a dozen concerts a year, all over Wales and at the Proms. The Chinese conductor is the first woman to be appointed to lead one of the BBC’s orchestras. Zhang is currently living in Milan, where she is Principal conductor of the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi. She just has been appointed Music Director of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra.

Jordi Savall who had planned to give a concert in the ‘jungle’ migrant camp in Calais, France, from where thousands of migrants hope to reach the United Kingdom, has finally cancelled the concert scheduled for 17 December. While the Teheran Symphony was denied a performance because there are women playing in it, the Bilkent Symphony Orchestra in Ankara, Turkey, will perform on December 12 with three women artists of the rising generation: Conductor, Soloist and Concertmaster! Stamatia Karampini, replacing John Axelrod, makes her debut on Bilkent SO’s podium, the violinist Syaka Sojhi performs Sibelius and for this women’s edition Alexandra Conunova exceptionally accepted to be Guest Concertmaster.

Ursprünglich sollte sie in diesem November wiedereröffnet werden, dann war von Ende 2017 die Rede und jetzt wird ganz vorsichtig Ende 2018 angepeilt. Und eine Kostensteigerung ist unausbleiblich. Bei Baubeginn waren Kosten von 253 Millionen Euro angegeben worden. Neueste Schätzungen belaufen sich auf zwischen 380 und 460 Millionen Euro.

Die deutsche Sopranistin Mojca Erdmann (40) hat am vergangenen Samstag im Salzburger Mozarteum die Uraufführung von Beat Furrers ‘spazio immergente’ gerettet. Die Sängerin sprang für die erkrankte Golda Schulz ein und hatte gerade mal 3 Tage Zeit, um das komplexe Stück für Sopran und Posaune des Schweizer Komponisten zu erarbeiten.
