San Francisco Opera Music Director Nicola Luisotti announced that Company Resident Conductor Giuseppe Finzi has stepped down in order to accept a growing demand of international conducting assignments that conflict with his position in San Francisco. Beginning with the 2015–16 Season, San Francisco Opera welcomes Spanish conductor Jordi Bernàcer as the Company’s new resident conductor through December 2017. In his upcoming assignments, Bernàcer will serve as special musical assistant to Music Director Luisotti on this season’s repertory. San Francisco Opera’s 93rd repertory season begins Friday, September 11 with Verdi’s Luisa Miller.

Myung-Whun Chung

Amid a nasty controversy about his salary and allegations of fraud, with subsequent police investigation, conductor Myung-Whun Chung decided to not renew his contract as chief conductor of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra. The jury of the International Clara Haskil competition has decided to award none of the three finalists with the Haskil Award. Yet, French pianist Guillaume Bellom (*1992) won the ‘Modern Times’ Award for the best performance of the imposed work by Thomas Adès. The Audience Award went to Yukyeong Ji (South Korea, *1988) who won also the Award of the young critics as well as the Childre’ns Corner Award. The 2015 competition had initially 90 candidates, 20 out of them having been admitted to the podium. The jury comprised Christian Zacharias, Catherine d’Argoubet, Konstanze Eickhorst, Elza Kolodin, Antonio Moral, Eric Lavanchy and Marc Pantillon.

Zuerst waren es Gerüchte, dann sprach sich Israel gegen den Auftritt seines Staatsbürgers Daniel Barenboim in Teheran aus, danach bestätigte Barenboims Orchester, die Berliner Staatkapelle, man führe Gespräche mit Teheran wegen eines Konzerts, jetzt gibt es die Absage aus dem Iran: einen Auftritt des Dirigenten Daniel Barenboim in Teheran wolle man nicht zulassen. Ob sich Israels Kulturministerin wohl bei ihrem iranischen Kollegen bedanken wird?

Das grosse Festspielhaus in Salzburg

262.893 Besucher aus 74 Nationen besuchten die Salzburger Festspiele 2015. Das geht aus einer heute veröffentlichten Statistik hervor. Mit 95% übertrifft die Platzauslastung die des Vorjahres um 2 Prozent. Insgesamt soll dieses Publikum, so heißt es, in 188 Vorstellungen 35 Stunden lang geklatscht haben. Um diese insgesamt 188 Aufführungen zu erarbeiten, haben die Künstler in diesem Sommer 2600 Stunden lang geprobt und 62.424 Flaschen Mineralwasser à 0,5 Liter getrunken. Mit 78.0900 Besuchern gab es einen neuen Rekord für die kostenlosen Übertragungen bei den Siemens Festspiel-Nächten.

Der Schuss vor den Bug der israelischen Kulturministerin (unser Bericht) hat nicht viel genutzt. Dirigent Daniel Barenboim plant definitiv ein Konzert mit der Berliner Staatskapelle in Teheran. Das teilte die Berliner Staatsoper am Donnerstag mit. Sobald die Gespräche abgeschlossen seien, werde es mehr Informationen geben.

Ukrainian conductor Kirill Karabits, Music Director of the Bournemouth Symphony and upcoming Generalmusikdirektor of the city of Weimar, conducted a big open air concert on 24 August at the Independence Square in Kiev. The concert was performed by the I Culture Orchestra, a band put together by Polish Mickiewicz Institute with young musicians from Poland, Ukraine, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia and Moldavia. Several thousand people attended the concert.
