American conductor James Conlon, 65, has been named principal conductor of the RAI National Symphony Orchestra in Turin, Italy. He will start his tenure in 2016, the orchestra announced today. Conlon will succeed Juraj Valcuha.

Leontyne Price

The City of Laurel (Mississippi, USA) has renamed one of their main roads, Beacon Street, after opera singer Leontyne Price who was born in that city in 1927. Leontyne Price Boulevard should be inaugurated as such by the singer herself who lives in New York.

Apple has announced the launch of Apple Music, a service that will add a subscription streaming service to iTunes. It will include a live, 24/7 global radio station and a feature called Connect where musicians can directly upload content. Apple Music will be available on June 30. The service will cost $9.99 a month for a single subscription or $14.99 a month for a family pass. No special announcement was made regarding classical music.

Die Universität Tübingen will die Figur von Kommissar Kurt Wallander des schwedischen Schriftstellers Henning Mankell im Sommer 2016 erstmals auf die Opernbühne bringen. Der Intendant der Alten Oper Frankfurt, Stephan Pauly (43), bleibt bis 2022 im Amt. Sein bis 2017 laufender Vertrag wurde um fünf weitere Jahre verlängert. Pauly hat die Leitung des Konzerthauses am 1. März 2012 übernommen.

Rani Calderon

Der 43-jährige israelische Dirigent Rani Calderon wurde zum Musikdirektor der ‘Opéra National de Lorraine’ in Nancy ernannt. Er war bislang Erster Gastdirigent. Sein Vertrag wurde heute unterzeichnet und wird und in der kommenden Saison für eine dreijährige Amtszeit anlaufen.

At the World Federation of International Music Competitions, WFIMC, a new Governance system with one Board, comprising the President and six members, replaces the former two-tiered structure of a Bureau and Committee. After the first elections for this new Board, the Federation announced the appointment of Didier Schnorhk, Secretary General of the Geneva International Music Competition, as its new President. Schnorhk succeeds Glen Kwok (International Violin Competition of Indianapolis) who held the position for six years. In addition to the Board, a full time Secretary-General based in Geneva will take on the role of Chief Executive Officer. Following an extensive, international search, Benjamin Woodroffe (Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition) has been appointed as the new Secretary-General (www.wfimc.org).

The Dallas Opera has announced the names of the six candidates selected to participate in the inaugural session of the Institute for Women Conductors at Dallas Opera. A total of 103 women conductors and professional musicians applied by the April 15th deadline. 44% of the applicants came from the United States. Read More →
