Zubin Mehta (79) ist erzürnt über die im Januar erfolgte Entlassung der österreichischen Intendantin Helga Schmidt am ‘Palau de les Arts’ in Valencia. In einem Interview mit der österreichischen Agentur APA sagte der Dirigent, er werde nicht mehr an dem spanischen Opernhaus dirigieren, bis Schmidt nicht Gerechtigkeit widerfahren sei. Für den Vorwurf der Veruntreuung öffentlicher Gelder gebe es bislang keine Beweise. Er sieht hinter den Ermittlungen gegen die Intendantin ein « politisches Komplott ».

The EU Prize for Contemporary Architecture, the Mies van der Rohe Award, was presented to the Philharmonic Hall in Szczecin over the weekend. The hall was designed by Barcelona-based studio Barozzi/Veiga. “This winning project finds a convincing formal and spatial strategy for a city which strives for a better future in a fast changing economy and social patterns,” the jury said. The building was hailed for “delivering a dignity to urban life and at the same time enhancing the city’s specific historical identity with a contemporary ‘monument’.”

During the big military parade in Moscow, marking 70 years since victory over Nazi Germany in World War Two, a children’s choir consisting of 500 singers was conducted by Valery Gergiev. According to the website of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation the program included music of the Great Patriotic War, war songs, songs about peace and friendship.

Während einer Ballett-Aufführung im Nürnberger Opernhaus ist gestern Abend (8. Mai) durch einen Kurzschluss in einem Sicherungskasten ein Schmorbrand mit viel Rauchentwicklung ausgelöst worden. Besucher und Theaterleute mussten das Haus verlassen. Der Brand konnte schnell gelöscht werden, und die Vorstellung wurde nach einer Dreiviertelstunde wieder aufgenommen.

Viel Bewegung gab es in den letzten Tagen in der Konzertsaal-Frage in München. Die Stadt hat endgültig Abstand genommen von der Idee, die aktuelle Philharmonie am Gasteig so zu sanieren, dass Münchner Philharmoniker und das Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks diesen Saal gleichberechtigt benutzen könnten. Der Münchner Oberbürgermeister erklärte den Plan aufgrund einer Expertise für gescheitert. Der bayerische Ministerpräsident Seehofer betonte seinerseits, es solle ein neuer Konzertsaal gebaut werden. Die Polit-Posse geht nach dieser 180 Grad-Wendung also weiter. Wann sie in konkrete Pläne umgewandelt wird, ist nicht gewusst.

A few days before the Berlin Philharmonic will vote upon a new chief conductor, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra announces that Mariss Jansons will serve as chief conductor until 2021, extending his current contract which runs until 2018. Jansons and the director of the Bayerische Rundfunk, Ulrich Wilhelm, agreed on this in a meeting that took place after an internal voting process within the orchestra had come to an end in the last few days. Jansons is since 2003 in this position, as successor to Eugen Jochum, Rafael Kubelik, Sir Colin Davis and Lorin Maazel.

The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra announced a new contract with its musicians. After reducing personnel costs by 15 percent in 2009, the Cincinnati Orchestra is able to hire 14 more full-time players over the next four years, expanding the size of the ensemble to 90. This is possible due to increased donations (up by 60 percent since 2009) and the elimination of unnecessary costs. The orchestra also moved forward artistically under its music director Louis Langrée.

Angesichts der Vielzahl an Festivals, die in Frankreich ihre Tätigkeit einstellen mussten, weil die lokalen Subventionen drastisch reduziert wurden, hat der Direktor des Festivals von Avignon, Olivier Py, in einem Fernsehinterview von « kulturellem Selbstmord’ gesprochen. Die Regionen und Kommunen, die ihre Festivals in Gefahr bringen, seien völlig uneinsichtig und hätten nicht erkannt, welchen kulturellen und auch wirtschaftlichen Stellenwert die Festivals in Frankreich haben. Der Kultursektor in Frankreich spiele acht Mal mehr Geld in die öffentlichen Kassen als die Automobilindustrie, sagte Py auf LCI.

Poland’s President Bronislaw Komorowski has unveiled a monument to the great pianist and statesman Ignacy Jan Paderewski in the city of Poznan.
In his speech, the President recalled the pianist’s role in the revival of the Polish state after the regaining of independence in 1918: “Paderewski used to say that Poland is his only party.
