In einem schlechten Klangbild erklingt eine tief empfundene und eigentlich recht spannende Interpretation von Edward Elgars Cellokonzert mit Gabriel Schwabe. Der Klang benachteiligt vor allem das Orchester, das matt und zusammengepfercht klingt und in einer schlechten Relation zum Soloinstrument. Das macht keine Freude beim Zuhören.
Das mit Oration betitelte durchwegs schwermütige Concerto Elegiaco von Frank Bridge setzt das Orchester nicht so massig ein wie das Elgar-Konzert und klingt so um einiges besser, auch wenn es dem ORF-Orchester immer noch an Klarheit, Präsenz und vor allem an Transparenz fehlt. Auch in dieser Aufnahme ist der Klang trocken, dumpf und mittig, benutzt die Seiten des Klangraums so gut wie nicht. Schade, denn Gabriel Schwabe spielt ausdrucksvoll und mit den richtigen Farben für diese Musik, und Christopher Ward begleitet mit dem Orchester sehr atmosphärisch und inspiriert.
The value of this deeply felt and actually quite exciting interpretation of Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto with Gabriel Schwabe is seriously diminished by a poor sound which is especially detrimental to the orchestra, which sounds dull and crammed together and in disrelation to the solo instrument. This is not suited for an agreeable listening.
Oration, Frank Bridge’s consistently melancholy Concerto Elegiaco does not use the orchestra as massively as the Elgar Concerto and so sounds a good deal better, although the ORF Orchestra still lacks clarity, presence and, above all, transparency. In this recording, too, the sound is dry, muffled and centered. A pity, because Gabriel Schwabe plays expressively and with the right colors for this music, and Christopher Ward accompanies with the orchestra very atmospheric and inspired.
