Am 20. Februar feiert Riccardo Chailly seinen 70. Geburtstag. Aus diesem Anlass veröffentlicht Decca ein neues Album, Verdi Choruses.
Die Qualität der CD ist keine Überraschung. Chailly hat das richtige Gespür für die Musik, und er hat einen exzellenten Chor sowie ein sehr gutes Orchester zur Verfügung. Er gibt der Musik den richtigen Verdi-Schmelz, ohne in banales Pathos und Beliebigkeit zu verfallen. Er sorgt sich um die Beziehung zwischen dem Orchester und dem vorbildlich artikulierenden Chor. Und er gibt der Musik mit wunderbaren Nuancen viel Ausdruckskraft. Und das klingt dann alles sehr italienisch, so wie man sich diese Chöre idealerweise vorstellt.
Die Auszüge aus Nabucco, I Lombardi, Ernani, Don Carlo, Macbeth, Il Trovatore, La Forza del Destino, Aida und Simon Boccanegra ergeben etwas mehr als eine Stunde Musik, die man sich gerne anhört.
On February 20, Riccardo Chailly celebrates his 70th birthday. To mark the occasion, Decca is releasing a new album, Verdi Choruses.
The quality of the CD is no surprise. Chailly has the right feel for the music, and he has an excellent chorus as well as a very good orchestra at his disposal. He gives the music the right Verdi melt, without lapsing into banal pathos and triviality. He cares about the relationship between the orchestra and the exemplary articulating chorus. And he gives the music a lot of expressive power with wonderful nuances. And it all sounds very Italianate, the way one ideally imagines these choruses to sound.
The excerpts from Nabucco, I Lombardi, Ernani, Don Carlo, Macbeth, Il Trovatore, La Forza del Destino, Aida and Simon Boccanegra add up to a little more than an hour of music that is a pleasure to listen to.
