Mexican conductor Enrique Batiz died yesterday, March 30, at the age of 82. As a pianist, Batiz was a semifinalist in the Marguerite Long International Piano Competition in Paris in 1965. In 1970, he was a finalist in the Ferruccio Busoni International Piano Competition in Italy.

His debut as a conductor was in the Palacio de Bellas Artes in 1969 with the Xalapa Symphony Orchestra.

In April 1971, he was named director, conductor, and founder of the State of Mexico Symphony Orchestra (OSEM). He continued in the post until 1983. He then was music director of the Mexico City Philharmonic Orchestra from 1983 to 1989.  In 1990, he resumed his directorship of the OSEM, remaining until 2017.

He recorded for EMI, Naxos, Pickwick, and RPO Records.
