Luis Schmidt

20-year-old conductor German conductor Luis Schmidt has established a new symphony orchestra in Edinburgh. The orchestra is named Capella Edina and will present four concerts at the capital’s Usher Hall with the aim of making classical music more accessible and serving the community.

Capella Edina is The City of Edinburgh’s symphony orchestra and the city’s first resident professional symphony orchestra since 1937.

According to what is said on the orchestra’s website, the band consists of a « hand-picked group of highly talented musicians who meet for specific concerts and recording projects and embraces a broad repertoire that enables it to reach the most diverse audience. »

They also say: « The most integral part of our work is also showcasing the value of music to young people. We do this through a specially curated programme of workshops and educational concerts for schools to let them participate in music and therefore actively contribute to our cultural heritage and our cultural future. »

Luis Schmidt began his musical career by learning the trumpet at the Klenze-Gymnasium in Munich, Germany. Aged 15, he started conducting and established his own brass ensemble, which he quickly expanded to a wind band and thereafter a chamber orchestra. He then went on studying conducting with Bruno Weil. He was educated in the Swarowsky-method after the infamous Austrian conductor Hans Swarowsky.

In September 2022 Schmidt moved from Munich to Newcastle, UK, to read Music at Newcastle University.
