After a three-year-long renovation the State Opera in Prague will re-open on January 5, exactly 132 years after its first inauguration. The historical building, next to the main railway station, first opened its doors to the public in 1888 as Neues Deutsches Theater with a performance of Wagner’s opera Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg.
The auditorium and foyers in neo-Rococo style were completely redecorated according to the original models. The building has been furnished with state-of-the-art technologies. All of the more than 1,000 seats feature touchscreen displays offering subtitles in several languages. For the new air-conditioning system, an extra storey had to be added to the building. Initially budgeted at 36 million €, the final cost rose to 51 million.
During the Reopening gala, Music Director Karl-Heinz Steffens will conduct a program with arias from various operas.
