Danish National Opera invites the audience to be a key part of a performance of Così fan tutte. Once the audience is in their seats and the doors are closed, everyone is invited to vote for a classic or a modern staging. The volume of the audience’s applause determines the choice and shortly afterwards the curtain rises … Basically, the production is designed by stage director Elisabeth Linton in a way that minutes will suffice for the team to switch to one or to the other version. After the break the audience votes again to decide the outcome of the story – truth or consequences.
Mozart’s Così fan tutte, about two sisters who are duped into swapping their fiancés, is one of the most amusing and intelligent operas ever. The men and women are both caught up in the confusion of falling in love – should they choose one or the other? “When we choose one path, at the same time we reject another that might have given us more happiness or satisfaction,” says General Manager and Artistic Director Annilese Miskimmon, who has created the new concept of a democratic opera. The premiere at Musikhuset Aarhus will take place on the 4th of February.
